During the chilly winter months, car owners commonly warm their cars while leaving their keys in the ignition. This practice is now known as “puffing,” which has significantly increased auto theft since the puffs of steam make vehicles an easy, visible target. Many states, including Texas, Maryland, and Ohio, to name a few, have made it illegal to leave a car unattended with the key in the ignition. In an attempt to reduce these crimes, drivers caught leaving their vehicles running while unattended may receive a warning as well as a citation that usually ranges between $100-$500.
